Building Envelopes

About Building Envelopes

D.A. Doddridge specializes in the science of evaluating and assessing all types of building envelopes – the elements necessary to protect a building and its interiors from water and vapor infiltration, as well as heat loss. These elements are comprised of below-grade foundation walls and structure, exterior walls, windows, doors, roofing and flashing systems. A properly designed and installed building envelope provides reliable and durable barriers to control water, air and moisture. Additionally, it will play a vital role in the health and longevity of a building.

D.A. Doddridge & Associates, Inc. leverages our experience and training in investigating and identifying building envelope defects to develop defensible opinions, accurate remedial costs,  and creative solutions for building envelope failures.

Building Envelopes Defects

Building envelope failures, such as water infiltration, leaking, and structural deterioration can result from a wide variety of construction defects and poor workmanship. Investigating system failures requires a thorough understanding of construction and design principles and in-depth knowledge and experience in proper workmanship, design and material installation. D.A. Doddridge & Associates, Inc. applies decades of hands-on construction and building experience with proven methods of investigation to identify and resolve building envelope failures.

Building Envelope Investigations

Out of 4,779 worker fatalities in private industry in calendar year 2018, 1,008 or 21.1% were in construction — that is, one in five worker deaths last year were in construction. The leading causes of private sector worker deaths (excluding highway collisions) in the construction industry were falls, followed by struck by object, electrocution, and caught-in/between. These “Fatal Four” were responsible for more than half (58.6%) the construction worker deaths in 2018, BLS reports. Eliminating the Fatal Four would save 591 workers’ lives in America every year (OSHA).

Specialty Investigations

D.A. Doddridge features mast and camera, and remote or drone survey equipment and technicians to enable comprehensive surveys of building envelopes and their conditions, including masonry, curtain wall, and roof and subgrade conditions. All surveys are recorded in extensive technical reports for both remediation and litigation exhibits.
